Another round of volunteer sign-ups for the Viterra Championships are this week in Portage la Prairie.

Manitoba's Men's Curling Championship is set for February of 2017, and Volunteer Co-Chair Dean Moxham explains the details of this second round of registration.

"Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night from 6 till 8 in the evening we're doing a volunteer sign up for all new volunteers that haven't had a chance to sign up with us in previous months. We also want to do an apparel sizing and get the clothing options out of the way like payments and so on. That includes all the people that signed up last spring in early sign-up, size out their shirts or fleece jacket, and we'll get them taken care of and placed into committees."

Anyone interested in helping out, and anyone who has signed up, need to stop in to get apparel sized. Moxham shares how they're doing for volunteers.

"We signed up about 120 early, and we're looking at probably another 180 to 200. We'll try to get to around 300, we find that's the number that seems to work for the jobs that are out there. There's anything from decorating beforehand to 50-50's, time-keepers, guys who work on the ice helping with the ice-makers to security. The people who take the tickets when you walk into the event, the bar. The bar is a big one."

He adds something like this just won't happen without help from the community.

"It's the lifeblood of any event. Without volunteers, they don't run because there are certain things we need. I think people get a sense of community when they volunteer a little bit, and they take pride in ownership type thing for them. You bring in 32 of the best teams in the country and we just want to put a good show for everybody and in turn, they're going to put on a good show for us."

Get down to the Portage Curling Club today, tomorrow or Wednesday to register and try on some apparel.
