The warm, dry weather we're experiencing right now may be welcome, but it's also an issue for many municipalities across the province.

It's causing very dry conditions, which are ideal for grass fires. That's why the RM of Victoria's imposed a burning ban.

Reeve Harold Purkess says it's something they did reluctantly.

"We postponed it as long as we could, because we really realize that it's quite an inconvenience to the farmers at this time of the year. They like to burn things, and clean things up, but it's just extremely dry out there right now, so we figured it was time."

Purkess stresses So far, they've had no serious trouble.

"We've been incredibly fortunate. We had one small grass fire last Sunday. It was nothing serious, the guys took care of it quite easily, but the potential is sure there right now."

He says many farmers are prepared for grass fires, with water tanks filled and fire-break equipment ready, just in case, similar to what they do in the fall.

Purkess notes the fire ban's in effect for an indefinite time period, but as soon as it can be lifted, it will be.
