Canada's largest tornado is the focus of an upcoming documentary. F-5 Ten Years Later is in the works, focusing on the 2007 tornado in Elie. Manitoba Storm Spotter's Jordan Carruthers and Manitoba Weather Centre's Justin Oertel are working on the piece, and will begin interviews in the coming weeks. Carruthers explains while most weather-related documentaries focus solely on the storm, they're taking a different approach.

Jordan Carruthers

"You see documentaries about storms always seem to be based oN the storm itself, and not so much the effect it has one everyone's lives. We thought we'd put a twist on things, and make something a little different to show the impact it's had on residents' lives, and how things have changed for them since."

He says they're planning to interview a number of residents who saw the impact of the incident first-hand. Carruthers notes it's their first documentary, and the local historic tornado was an obvious choice for the subject.

"Obviously the Elie tornado was one of the biggest things to happen in Manitoba weather-wise over the last few years. We thought it would be good to show how these things effect people's lives, the dangers involved in severe weather when it strikes, and how to be prepared if it were to ever happen again."

He notes while they've yet to conduct interviews within the community, they're already receiving encouragement from those who've heard about the project.

"We're hearing a lot of good feedback. People are getting really excited for it. There seems to be a lot of people who are wanting to see it or wanting to be involved. We haven't had any negative feedback, that's for sure."

He notes if anyone wants to be involved with the documentary they can contact them through the Manitoba Storm Spotter Facebook page.
