It's that time of year again. . .time to get those incomes taxes done. Sandra Duchak, co-owner of First Choice Income Tax in Portage, says the deadline is coming up quickly, so she advises everyone to bring their paperwork in as soon as possible. Duchak notes if you file late and you owe money to Canada Revenue, they will charge you interest. She says it's important to have all your documentation together so you're not looking for things at the last minute. Duchak adds keeping handy your medical expenses and everything you can claim as a deduction is the key.

She says one problem that's cropped up recently here in the Portage area is people forgetting to report their T-4 A's from the Coop. Duchak notes if you fail to report it, Canada Revenue can claim that money as taxable income and quite often it's not. She adds it's consumer goods and not taxable, but this situation has created a few reassessments in the last several years.

Duchak says things get very hectic around their office as the tax deadline draws closer, noting they strongly recommend to all their regular clients that they come in as early as possible. While the regular deadline is April 30th, that date falls on a Saturday this year, so Canada Revenue will consider your return as filed on time if it's postmarked by midnight on May 2nd.
