Now that the warmer spring weather is starting to melt some of the snow, the City of Portage is beginning street sweeping. Portage la Prairie's Public Works manager Brian Taylor says they're going to try to finish the busier streets first.

"Although there is no particular order in which we do it, we do know which areas are the busiest. We try to deal with those priority streets at an appropriate time when it's most convenient for the public. For residential areas, we'll be going out the day after garbage day which is the same as the snow removal, and the same rules apply as in the past."

Taylor says it was too cold last week to do much street sweeping, but notes this week should be better.

"It's really a hit and miss situation right now because it's a bit too cold. A lot of areas still have ice on the roads, and we had to pull off the road one day last week because our water jets froze, which creates a bit of a dust storm. Right now it is a hit and miss thing...if the weather stays the way it's looking like it's going to be, we'll start making headway on our priority streets."

He says for street cleaning in residential ares the same rules apply as snow removal in the winter, when the streets were cleaned the day following garbage pickup day. Taylor reminds you to keep your vehicle off of the street the day after garbage day to allow city workers to clean.
