July 20th's storm that caused much devastation in the RM of Portage la Prairie was at the centre of a resolution passed at the RM Council meeting yesterday. Reeve Kam Blight says assessments have been made for costs associated with dealing with the damage.

"It's pretty hard for public works administration to put a dollar figure on the damage in our municipality. We're fortunate that we didn't have structural damage, which is great. However, there is a lot of cleanup that is required throughout a lot of our roads across the southern part of our municipality and the community of Oakville."

Blight says some work's been completed.

"We've been keeping track of all the time and hours spent, and the equipment that's been used. Right now we're roughly $30,000 in clean up costs, which is quite substantial. And it's not 100% confirmed as we are still coming across damage as the days go on. Sometimes there are some trees that have been knocked down, or they're just hanging and ready to fall, but haven't yet. There's going to be ongoing costs for us. But I think it speaks of the severity to the severity and the magnitude of the storm that wreaked a lot of havoc a lot of private homeowners, and a lot of properties across our municipality."

He outlines the summary of the resolution.

"The RM of Portage la Prairie is going to be requesting some disaster financial assistance from the Province and the federal government. That resolution's going to be going into the province to the Emergency Measures Organization."

Blight adds the RM's also encouraging the governments to financially assist private homeowners throughout the RM that were severely impacted.
