The RM of Portage la Prairie has some cleaning up to do after last week's storm. Reeve Kam Blight says there was damage throughout the RM, even as far east as Oakville.

"It was very widespread, and our Municipality had a lot of trees down a lot of roads that were blocked. The crews have done an excellent job of getting it so the roads are passable and safe to travel on right now. However. there's a lot of clean-up to do in the ditches with trees down and debris. So that'll be something we'll try and work through, as we still have to continue on with day-to-day operations."

Blight discusses the thought of possible support from the provincial government.

"Usually, the responsibility is on the property owner to clean up their own properties. Right now the province has not declared this wind event as a disaster. However, we are in discussions with them. We just want to see where they're going to go from there, but we'll see what happens. We're not holding our breath but you never know. It would be beneficial to some for sure."

Blight says it's really hard to tell how long the entire clean-up will take.

"It all depends on the weather we get. We've been behind the 8-ball a lot of the year with our road conditions as it is, and our fellows have a lot of work to do for their normal day-to-day operations. It'll be a couple of months probably getting everything cleaned up, because I'm sure we don't even know some of the damage out there. We have such a large municipality and not every road gets travelled every day."
