Calls for service to STARS Air Ambulance in Manitoba continue to surpass those of 2015, the busiest year so far for the organization in the province.

Base Director and Flight Paramedic Grant Therrien says the month of August kept up with the busy summer pace of the air ambulance service.

"We did sixty-five missions across the province, fourteen of which were in south central Manitoba. We did everything from highway speed collisions to recreational accidents to medical emergencies."

He goes on to say that STARS is most often called out to motor vehicle collisions during the summer months, adding these incidents account for about fifty percent of the call volume related to trauma.

"There's a lot of travel on our highways; people are going out to the cabin, they're commuting on their various vacations and they're also engaging in recreational activities on motor vehicles such as quads (and) boats."

Therrien is however, quite pleased to say that STARS has responded to very few agricultural related incidents this summer and says medics appreciate the precautions farmers are taking to stay safe.

Meanwhile, now that Fall is in the air and Winter looms near, Therrien is taking this opportunity to send another safety reminder for motorists.

"There's always that first snowfall on the highways...and that tends to be very busy for collisions as people need to back into winter driving mode, so just be aware of that."

He encourages Manitobans to enjoy what summer has left to offer and to be safe.
