The weather system that produced yesterday's blizzard is still having a significant impact on the Portage la Prairie area.

Environment Canada's Natalie Hasell says it's hard to know just when we'll see an end of the snowfall because besides the low pressure system and trough that's associated with it, there's what she calls an added complication.

"You guys are right by the lake (Manitoba), which has yet to freeze over. So there's a really good chance that some of the snow you're seeing is also lake effect snow. So we're talking about 2 to 4 cm related to the low pressure system, but locally, you could have quite a bit more if the winds do line up well with the lake."

Hasell acknowledges Environment Canada predicted a return to sunshine by Friday, but it could be different in the Portage area because of the lake effect.

"If the winds are not in alignment with the lake, you could actually have sunny conditions all day Friday, but it's a bit of question right now as to exactly how the winds are going to line up, and how strong they're going to be. So, you'll probably see a mix of sun and cloud, I'm guessing. We have another system coming through Saturday night, Sunday, so another short period of cloudy conditions, with right now, a 60% chance of flurries."

Hasell believes we should see the sun by early next week.
