Statistics are in this autumn for the top five regions in deer collisions. Manitoba Public Insurance spokesperson Brian Smiley says Portage la Prairie isn't in the top five.

"There certainly are vehicle-deer collisions in that region, but they did not make the top five, which I suppose is a good thing for everybody out there. Unfortunately, the Eastman region is the top region in Manitoba for vehicle-deer collisions at 1,540. That region consists of Steinbach, Lac du Bonnet, and Birds Hill. So, it's a very vast region with a lot of bush-land. Number 2 is Westman at 1,400; three is Interlake at 1,060. The City of Winnipeg is surprisingly at 610, and Pembina Valley is at 600."

Smiley outlines the conditions that tend toward more accidents with deer.

"We know that deer don't like to be visible too much. October and November are the two worst months for deer/vehicle collisions. It's the rutting season, and the animals are transient and moving from area to area, and unfortunately they're crossing roadways."
