The Portage Friendship Centre's getting ready to construct a tipi, and they're looking for some helping hands. Executive Director Shirley Bernard says the annual tipi construction at the Fort la Reine Museum in preparation of National Aboriginal Day is set for Monday. She says they usually have about 20 volunteers helping to erect the structure, adding it's always a good time.

"We're starting at one in the afternoon and we're asking if volunteers can come out and give us a hand. What we're doing is setting up the big tipi the museum has set up, it's usually there until fall. We also do a little bit of tipi teachings as we go along."

She says the often have help from other community organizations and individuals, and describes the annual set up as an exciting experience.

"It's a great event, and it's a spiritual event. Every year that we've gone out we've had eagles circling above us, and it's just so awesome to see that. It's a very touching experience."

Bernard says they're thrilled with their ongoing partnership with Fort la Reine Museum for National Aboriginal Day, which falls on Jun 21st.
