Portage la Prairie firefighters, RCMP, and EMS were called out around 8:30 last night, to deal with a burning semi-truck on the Trans Canada Highway east of Portage, a little west of the Oakville turnoff.

The westbound lane of the Trans Canada was closed for just over an hour.

Officials say the semi driver saw smoke coming out of the engine compartment, and when he opened it, there were flames.

The trailer was carrying hazardous material, so the driver unhitched it and moved the tractor some distance away.

He wasn't injured, but the tractor was destroyed.
