Drivers near Stony Mountain School may need to slow down this fall. The RM of Rockwood is discussing reducing the speed limit in that area, something seen across the province after provincial regulations were recently changed.

Reeve Jim Campbell says they're discussing a resolution to lower the speed limit to 30 kilometres per hour, and expects that to come forward in the near future. While some communities like Portage have implement year-round, 24/7 speed reductions, Campbell says that's not on the table just yet.

"That wasn't the discussion, but this resolution hasn't come forward to Council yet, it was just discussed at Committee of the Whole. When a resolution comes forward there is a possibility there could be a friendly amendment to it, but as of now it's not the case."

Campbell says they're following the trend set by other Manitoban municipalities, which has seen local governments implementing their own school zone speed reductions over the past year or so. He says while the area in question is quite safe, this could help deter some of the problem drivers.

"Basically, it's just safety, maybe a little deterrent to keep people slowing down. Most people seem to drive 5 to 10 kilometres above the speed limit, so maybe if we drop it, it will be a little safer than it is now."
