Schools which were previously showing a decline in students are experiencing an increase in enrollment. School division superintendent Hazen Barret says it's an interesting phenomenon.

He explains factors which may have influenced this increase.

"Very strong programming, some very strong initiatives on the part of the schools and on the part of the board in regard to some of the things that they've done to not only attract, but keep students."

Barret says there's been a positive reaction to a number of programs, such as the walking school bus and breakfast programs, as well as quite the reduction in the transiency rate.

Schools previously affected by this decline include North Memorial and Fort La Reine.

"We were worried, at one time North Memorial School was getting close to having less than a hundred students. We were scared, not very many years back, that they were going to be starting to show quite a strong decline in the number of students. Fort La Reine, at one time, was also at that point."

This situation has since turned around with both schools experiencing increased enrollment as well as doubled student populations.
