In wake of a deadly attack in a British Columbia school, the Portage la Prairie School Division (PLPSD) will have discussions regarding its prevention policies.

But PLPSD superintendent Todd Cuddington doesn't expect any changes.

In what police have described as a random attack, one teenage girl was killed and another injured in an Abbotsford, B.C., school last week. PLPSD Supt. Todd Cuddington says the incident was a tragedy, and these events cause school administrators to review prevention policies.

PLPSD schools are open and accessible to all according to current policy, Cuddington says, with visitors required to check-in at the main office.

"We have an administration meeting with our school principals coming up, and we'll be having a discussion about what happened," Cuddington says. "But I don't think it will necessarily lead to any policy changes."

Cuddington says administrators are weary of any major incidents of school-related violence, and discussions always follow about local procedures. He adds the Division has lockdown procedures for emergency situations that are regularly practiced, and staff receive ongoing training for crisis response.

"What a lot of the focus has turned to is prevention," explains Cuddington. "Especially in regards to students who might be at risk, and keeping an eye on them and being more proactive."
