The crisp flavour of fresh local vegetables will be on display Wednesday, as the Portage Rotary Club is set to host its 38th annual vegetable sale outside of Portage Co-op.

Vegetable Sale Chair James Bolton says the community support is always strong for what has become an annual tradition in Portage, and visitors attend from as far as Thompson.

"People put it on their calendars, people wait for this event," Bolton says. "And it's great to see that kind of commitment."

Bolton says the veggie sale is one of Rotary's largest fundraisers, having raised $235,000 since its inception. All of the money goes back to the community through various Rotary sponsored projects.

Local projects the Rotary Club support include the Rotary Republic Park 10-year investment for maintenance and upkeep of the outdoor facility, various play structures and PCU Centre sponsorships, among other initiatives.

"You can't go very far without seeing some form of sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie," Bolton says.

He adds people enjoy the selection of fresh veggies from local farms, and notes girl guide's cookies will also be featured during this year's sale.

"I think people really enjoy, really support and really buy into what we're offering."
