The Oakville Skating Rink's getting a new Zamboni after asking the RM of Portage la Prairie for funding assistance. Ward 4 Councillor Roy Tufford outlines how the funds are being supplied.

"Oakville skating rink has a problem with their Zamboni, and it needs to be replaced. They can't refurbish the old one anymore. Fortunately, we have a fund called the Hextall Fund. It's for recreation and sports in the Portage area. We have enough in that fund that we felt it was appropriate to give them whatever they needed -- they've done some fundraising -- but whatever they needed to purchase a Zamboni."

He says the Hextall Fund was started by NHL player Bryan Hextall from Poplar Point for sports and recreation.

"The Hextall Fund is actually money put aside by both the RM and the City. When the deal was struck to do the PCU Centre there was commitment because the City was funding the other pool the RM was in partnership with in Southport. The Hextall Fund is partially funded by the City for recreation in the whole area, but mostly in the RM."
