After a year and a half in the position, Donnovan Hillman reflects on his time as Portage la Prairie Youth City Councillor. He says he has always been interested in politics and explains how he received the position.

"I was a student for the school newspaper and I was covering the 2014 election. It just so happened that during that time I met Mayor Ferris and the other candidates and learned of the opportunity and come the election I threw my name into the hat and got the position."

Hillman notes the talent shows and family fun days were some of the highlights of his time on council.

"Definitely two of the biggest highlights were the youth talent shows in June 2015 and this past talent show, Portage has Talent, at the Potato Festival. They are big events to organize but overall the success of those events, especially the talent show, really blew my mind. The family fun days as well, the 2015 one and the 2016 one. Hundreds of people attended, numerous non-profit groups came together wanting to get involved. I'd say those were probably the biggest highlights I had."

Hillman notes that he'll be very interested to see what the next Youth City Councillor does with the role and hopes the position is maintained for many years. He adds that he'd like to thank the mayor, city staff, council, and his family and friends for all the trust, support and mentorship that he's received from them during his time as Youth Councillor.
