The Association of Manitoba Municipalities' convention's coming up next week in Winnipeg, and municipal officials across the province are preparing to attend.

RM of Coldwell Reeve Brian Sigfusson has a couple of items he hopes to see the convention deal with, and one is amalgamation. He says Coldwell's not interested in re-opening the process, and moving things around.

"Because I cannot any advantage in any of that they've done. We're having a meeting with (Minister of Indigenous and Municipal Relations) Eileen Clarke on that. Not that we're forced to do it, but it's not a good business decision for us to be involved in it. And there's no saving, it's a lot of money spent. The way I look at it, if the government wants to do that, they should have every municipality they've done that to, wipe off all their debt, and start out at zero, and give them all some money to get going."

Sigfusson also wants to talk about pushing the province to complete construction of a Lake Manitoba drainage channel near Watchorn quickly. He points out the lake level's very high.

"If you get a bad rainy, wet spring, and lots of snow, we could be in another flood potential. And I just can't understand why they can't get this thing moving faster, forward. They've done enough study and stalling on it -- that's what I call it -- and put the wet channel right through down the Watchorn Bay. We'll always have water, and so our wildlife will be served well, our farmers will be served well. Doing the other options they have are more costly, and I cannot see the advantage in them."
