A proclamation related to the Real Men Live Abuse Free Campaign was signed today at Portage la Prairie City Hall. November is now Real Men LAF Campaign Awareness Month in Portage, with the 14th being Real Men Live Abuse Free Day.

Portage Family Abuse Prevention Centre Executive Director Joyce Schroeder shares her thoughts on the City stepping up to help support their cause.

"I am thrilled. Mayor Ferris has never hesitated and from the time I brought this forward he's been there, and he says it's important work. It makes me feel empowered because women can't do this alone. We need the good men in our communities to step forward and be role models, and to give voice to what we're trying to say."

Portage Mayor Irvine Ferris says it's something he believed was necessary.

"Unfortunately (domestic abuse) is in Portage, and the work that's being done in terms of raising awareness this month is really critical. These things should no longer be taboo in our society, or in our community right here in Portage, and I think the more they're talked about, the more awareness is raised, the more progress we'll make on these issues. Someday, way into the future, we'll say we don't need this anymore, but unfortunately, today we do."

She adds they also recognize the men that do live abuse free, and she's thankful for all the support they give to women.
