July 11th
Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the Kelly K Crescent area, as the caller was concerned about the safety of some people trying to get a kite out of power lines. Officers arrived and ensured that no one was at risk of harming themselves through electrocution. Police remind everyone to ensure they check their surroundings when playing outside. Powerlines, open water, and construction areas can cause injuries or death without warning if proper care and attention are not given.

July 12th
Police were informed of some mischief to a vehicle parked along Royal Road S. The vehicle owner had left their window slightly open, and returned to find that unknown suspects had emptied a fire extinguisher inside the car. Investigators are asking for the assistance from the community in locating these suspects. If you have any information in regards to this incident, please contact your local police detachment.

July 13th
The owner of a camper trailer in the RM of Portage la Prairie found the vehicle had been damaged while they were away. The property owner provided police with photos of 4 suspects, all believed to be youths. Investigators were able to identify one youth, who was known to them. The investigation is still ongoing, with criminal charges pending.


July 14th
The Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the CO-OP gas bar on Saskatchewan Avenue for an abandoned vehicle, and a theft from the store. Officers arrived to learn that 3 suspects had entered the store, acting suspicious, and then quickly left after taking a pack of gum. Though the suspects fled the scene, they abandoned one of the vehicles they had arrived in: a light blue Power Wheels toy Jeep. In a brazen move, the suspects returned later that day, in what police believe was an attempt to recover their misplaced conveyance. The suspects were later identified, all between the ages of 6 and 10, and were promptly returned to their parents, with the hope that the lesson of right-from-wrong would be learned that day.

July 15th
Portage la Prairie emergency services were required at collision on Saskatchewan Avenue E, towards the rail crossing, which saw a third vehicle strike two that were waiting for a train to cross. Only minor injuries and property damage to the vehicles were reported. The matter is still under investigation in relation to what caused the collision, with charges dependent upon the findings. Police remind all motorists to pay attention when behind the wheel, and use caution when approaching railway crossings regardless if the lights are flashing or not.

A motorist was observed travelling at 139 km/h in a 100 km/h zone along Hwy 1. The male driver (43 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $561.25.

Portage la Prairie RCMP took two people into custody after a collision on Hwy 1 near the Flying J gas station. A male (37 years old) and female (23 years old) were taken into custody after receiving several calls about an erratic driver. Investigators believed that the male was under the influence of drugs, leading to the erratic behaviour and the collision. Charges are pending in this incident, which is still under investigation.

July 16th
Kyle Dean Beaulieu was taken into custody after police learned he was at large on a warrant for his arrest. Beaulieu was reportedly causing several disturbances around the downtown area, and was located after he allegedly stole liquor from the MLCC. Beaulieu was held until such time as he could be brought before the court, on criminal charges of assault, assault with a weapon, failing to comply with a probation order, and theft.

Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to an incident on PR 240, North of Portage la Prairie, where a motorist was run off the road by another. Investigators found the suspect vehicle a short time after being dispatched, and came in contact with the male driver (56 years old), who was showing signs of being highly intoxicated. Officer’s suspicions were confirmed a short time later, when the driver provided breath samples at nearly four times the legal limit. The driver had his license suspended for a minimum of 3 months, and the vehicle will be impounded for a minimum of 60 days at the owner’s expense.

July 17th
After observing a vehicle fail to stop for a red light, officers came in contact with a male driver (54 years old). Investigators determined that the driver had consumed alcohol prior to driving, and was taken into police custody for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The driver’s subsequent breath samples resulted in a 3 month license suspension, and the vehicle being impounded for a minimum of 30 days at the owner’s expense.
