Portage la Prairie RCMP reports a spike in thefts in the area last week, and remind you to be on the look out for any suspicious activity.

In a prior release, Police say they responded to four theft calls on Nov. 23 at various locations in Portage la Prairie. RCMP also reported last week: a theft from a local business in excess of $5,000, shoplifting at Walmart, thefts of vehicles, a break and enter at Shell Gas Station on Hwy 1, a shed break-in and attempted forced entry at Hills Drug Store.

Sgt. Brian Brewer acknowledges there was a spike in thefts in the area.

"It was obviously way more than usual, in vehicles and businesses, and we've stepped up our patrols accordingly," Sgt. Brewer says. "We're asking people to be diligent in keeping things locked up, and keep their eyes open. If you see anything suspicious, let us know."

Brewer says when these types of sprees happen, RCMP works closely with Citizens On Patrol Program (COPP).

"We have an excellent COPP program in the area," he explains. "When stuff like this happens we update them and make sure they're patrolling, and keeping an extra eye out."

"Hopefully, all working together, we can shutdown these thefts," continues Brewer. "And hopefully it's just a one-time spree."

The trend is already in decline, Brewer notes, and says often times groups will try to steal as much as they can over a 1-2 day period, then cease activity. Still, he reminds you to report any suspicious activity immediately.

"If in doubt at all, give us a call," he says. "If we don't know about, or no one gives us a call, we can't respond or take appropriate action."
