The blizzard conditions and blowing snow in the Portage la Prairie area earlier today led to several vehicles being stuck in ditches or medians, the RCMP reports.

RCMP community liaison officer Const. Sean O'Keefe says there was a high call volume due to poor weather conditions earlier today, and reminds to be cautious when severe weather strikes.

"We have winter survival kits on sale at stores across the country for a reason. You need to be prepared for this type of weather if you have to be on the roads," O'Keefe says. "Having warms clothes, snacks and water in the vehicle with you, it goes a long way if that unfortunate incident does happen where you are in a ditch or stranded."

"But going one step further, if you don't have to be on the road, don't," continues O'Keefe. "Stay home."

While highways often close when reduced visibility conditions arise, O'Keefe reminds dangerous driving conditions can still exist with city limits.

"Blowing winds ... can cause very quick white-out conditions. Although it may be brief, it (can) be just enough to distract a driver or blind a driver of what may be in front of them," the RCMP constable says. "Taking extra caution and extra time when approaching intersections or crosswalks, and just lowering your speed will go a long way to making sure you're safe, and keeping others safe on the road as well."

In the event you do get stuck, O'Keefe says safety should be your top priority. Try to make sure you're in a safe spot and won't be caught off guard by any other passing traffic. Then make sure your four way flashers are on, and call for help. Never leave your vehicle and ensure you stay warm.

"It looks like another proud Canadian winter is ahead of us here again, unfortunately," O'Keefe adds.
