There were a lot of smiling faces yesterday at Portage la Prairie's PCU Centre, as the 2015 RBC Cup legacy cheques were presented to five local organizations. They split roughly $150,000.

One was the Portage Regional Recreation Authority, and General Manager David Sattler says it feels great to see $50,000-plus.

"We worked hard with the group to help put on an event here in Portage that's going leave a lasting legacy."

The Arron Asham Chance 2 Play Foundation received just over $14,000, and administrator Nancy Funk calls it amazing.

"we had no idea what to expect, so obviously, over $14,000 is an enormous boost to our program. It will go directly into programming, so that we can help more central plains kids get involved in hockey or CanSkate."

The BDO Centre for the Community received more than $14,000, and President Shane Moffatt says it'll be put to good use.

"We earmarked this money strictly for the south wall, where we got all our advertising signs. We put white tin up there -- and that's already done. The signs are back up, and it looks just awesome."

The Portage Terriers' Scholarship Fund received a $50,000 boost, and team board member Trent Ward says it's great for current and future players.

"Not every MJHL team has the affordability of these things, so it's been great for our team, and another reason to come play for the Portage Terriers."

Another $14,000 went to the Portage Minor Hockey Association.
