The circumstances surrounding injuries to a man in police custody are under investigation. The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba's looking into the circumstances surrounding the injury of a prisoner, who was arrested April 2nd on Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

According to the IIU, members of the Dakota Ojibway Police Service attended a home in the community to execute the arrest, and we're able to take the male suspect into custody without incident. He was taken to the Sandy Bay detachment for about 11 hours, before being transferred to RCMP custody in Portage la Prairie.

At some point, the prisoner suffered a cut to his forehead, and was taken to the Portage District General Hospital for treatment.

The IIU was notified of the injury and hospitalization on April 5th, and are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Police Services Act requires an investigation whenever the actions of an officer may have resulted in injury to a person that requires hospitalization.
