Manitoba Public Insurance is reminding drivers to prepare properly for winter driving conditions. MPI spokesperson Brian Smiley says before any winter commute through challenging conditions, it's important to ensure your vehicle is in good working order, full of gas and equipped with an emergency kit.

"Meaning you have blankets, candles and matches to keep you warm," Smiley explains, noting it's also important to have a vehicle cell phone charger.

If conditions are dangerous, Smiley suggests letting someone know you are heading on the road, and providing your estimated time of arrival. That way, if anything does happen and you're unable to communicate, that person can call for aid.

In the event that your vehicle does get stuck, and you're stranded, Smiley warns you should never leave the car.

"People oftentimes wander out and start venturing. Sometimes that ends badly. You want to stay in your vehicle," says Smiley, noting you should turn on your four-way flashers and wait for help to arrive.

"Also ensure that your tail-pipe is not getting covered with snow. That allows the vehicle to run in a good manner, and ensures you're not at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning."
