The Portage Wildlife Club's just been started, so you don't have to travel outside of town to get involved in such a club.

Board of directors

President Rod Gladue explains how it all came together.

Travis Ross"We've started off great. We had a really good response. We started out by just kind of talking about it, and we thought we'd hold a meeting together. And the next thing you know we had about 15 guys show up. And decided that we're going to start this club in Portage. We didn't have one here, and everyone was traveling and going somewhere else. So, we decided to start one here."

Gladue outlines what they're all about.

"We're affiliated with the Manitoba Wildlife Federation. but our own club here is a promote-and-provide, kind of deal. And we want to promote hunting and fishing for the youth, and for all members of the family, actually. And I mean everybody, like the women. We want to promote as much hunting and fishing as we can, and in a safe manner. And we hope to provide some training and a safe place to shoot."

He notes they provide a shooting range in a safe location.

If you would like to join, there is a membership director Darcy Rands (204) 870-0069, or you can go to MacDonald's Sporting goods for a membership form. They're currently running a membership drive until May 1. If you apply as a member, your name is submitted for a draw for the first few winners to win a muzzle loader and a hunting kit from MacDonald's Sporting Goods. Gladue notes they've got 30 plus members already, adding it's growing quickly. Membership fee is $50 annually per person, $100 per family, and $20 per youth. Membership includes membership with the Manitoba Wildlife Federation, the use of the lodge, gun range, four magazines a year from the MWF, as well as full insurance coverage.
