Portage la Prairie RCMP are urging parents and guardians to check their kids' Halloween candy haul, after receiving a report of a foreign object found inside a bite-sized candy bar.

Community Liason Officer Const. Sean O'Keefe says police believe the object was given out from a home along Prout Drive in Portage.

"We're encouraging anyone and everyone who was out in that area just to double-check their candy," O'Keefe says. "It's always a good idea to make sure the packaging is intact. If candy has been opened, don't consume it. And, homemade treats especially should be avoided, unless you trust the person who's given them and you know where it's coming from."

O'Keefe adds police believe it's a single incident at the moment, but encourages anyone who comes across any foreign objects found in kids' candy to report it to police immediately.

"We want to be sure we can act on that, and just want to be sure everyone is safe out there," Const. O'Keefe says. "Unfortunately incidents like this do happen across the country."

"We can't predict it," continues O'Keefe. "We can only try to make sure everyone tries to do what they can to make sure their kids are safe with their candy."
