The Scary Clown trend sweeping across Canada recently reached Winnipeg, but the RCMP say they haven't received any reports of incidents in Portage la Prairie.

In Winnipeg earlier this week, two teens dressed as clowns reportedly chased a group of people in a park. Similar incidents of people dressing up as clowns and randomly frightening others have been reported recently all across Canada -- a trend that originated south of the border over the summer. RCMP Constable Sean O'Keefe says while they haven't received any reports in Portage, police are aware of the trend.

"We're not immuned to trends that are sweeping the country," O'Keefe says. "In these instances it's hard to tell what the person's intent is, as they're disguised. But obviously they're taking that to their advantage to scare somebody."

"But your personal safety is your personal safety, and trying to keep yourself safe is our job as well," continues O'Keefe. "In these instances, people behaving in those ways could face criminal charges of mischief, causing a disturbance, or arrested for breaching the peace."

O'Keefe notes anyone who encounters suspicious activity can report it by contacting the police.
