Portage Mutual Insurance presented cheques yesterday to the Community Foundation of Portage and District, and to the Oakville and Community Endowment Fund. Portage Mutual President and CEO John Mitchell explains why they donate the money every year.

"We've been presenting the cheques for a long time. Our board commits to donate some of the profits we have back to the communities in which we operate, and this is just a great cause. We try to contribute every year because it's something that we really enjoy doing."

Mitchell says the $5,000 cheques are always used in a purposeful way. He notes the CFPD does great work for the community, and Portage Mutual is proud to be a part of it.

CFPD Executive Director Mary Lynn MoffatCFPD executive director Mary Lynn Moffat comments on receiving the $5,000 cheque.

"It's fabulous to have the support of businesses like Portage Mutual. Portage Mutual has been involved with the CFPD for a number of years; they have they have their own fund set up under the endowment plan. Their fund has grown over the years to over $85,000, so today's $5,000 was a lovely bonus to add to it. Their support makes a huge difference in allowing us to to be able to put more money out into the community for projects."

Oakville and Community Endowment Fund representative Len Essay says the community really appreciates the $1,000 given to them, and explains how it's used.

"It's great. We receive the funds every year and Portage Mutual is a great supporter of Oakville, and they make it easier for us to operate our facilities. The money is spent to keep all of our activities functioning in Oakville, and we give two $1,000 bursaries each year to kids that are carrying on to university."
