The Dakota Oyate Summit held in Dakota Tipi First Nation Thursday covered several issues in hopes of forming an organized effort by the Dakota people to get involved in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Nation-to-Nation program. Canupwakpa Dakota First Nation sovereign leader Franklin Brown notes a highlight of the talks.

Franklin Brown"It's about the discussion of the abolishment of the Indian Act. I think it's not abolishing the Indian Act. It's returning to our real ways of governance. When we return to the real ways of our governance, the Indian Act does not apply to us at all."

Not many representatives of the Dakota First Nations arrived for the summit, but Brown says, "It's accomplished the way it's supposed to. Any time something like this is a small crowd, it grows. But if we had a big audience, it would be failing. I believe in this small crowd that started out. It's going to turn into the way it's supposed to be."

Brown outlines their next step.

"More education needs to be provided to some of the people that are going to represent the people."

He adds, "I say, Goodbye to the Indian Act."
