Portage la Prairie RCMP are investigating a phone scam, after over 15 complaints came into the detachment recently.

Constable Sean O'Keefe says the scammers claim to be from Canada Revenue Agency, and outlines what they're looking for.

"Asking for their social insurance number, asking for their banking information, and in some instances, even asking for what their balances might be in their accounts. This is not how Canada Revenue conducts their requests for information. These are scammers that are trying to take advantage the fact that we are in the middle of tax season, but again, this is not how Canada Revenue gathers their information."

O'Keefe stresses you should never give out any personal information, but if you do, he has some recommendations.

"It can be very embarrassing. People feel as though they've been duped, as though they've been taken advantage of, but don't hesitate to call the RCMP. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, contact your banking institution, and let them know that you have fallen prey to this."

He adds none of the 15 or so callers from Portage have fallen for the scam.

O'Keefe says the male scammer's trying to disguise his voice by using an accent, and the calls are made through an internet service provider, which makes them harder to trace.
