Off-road enthusiasts are hitting the road, now that the spring like temperatures have arrived. The Portage la Prairie RCMP is reminding those driving ATVs and dirt-bikes to ensure they're aware of the rules surrounding off-road vehicles. Constable Sean O'Keefe explains they're already hearing several complaints from residents, related to the use of these vehicles near Fisher Avenue.

"We've received a couple of complaints of the last couple of weeks of people on ATVs and dirt-bikes using the grass space between the CN Rail and CP Rail on Fisher Avenue, just to get from one side of town to the other. Some folks are doing it in a lot safe manner than others, and the complaints we're receiving are people going at a high rate of speed, and coming close to the walking path."

O'Keefe notes the area surrounding the railway is private property, but says the RCMP's main concern relates to public safety.

"There are stipulations that require people to trailer or transport an off-road vehicle to where it can be lawfully used. The CN and CP rails are considered private property. Obviously I can't condone people driving on private property, but if people are using excessive speed and causing excessive noise, that's where our main concern is, of course."

O'Keefe says some of those who've filed complaints noted those using the area to travel have been blocking their license plates, making it difficult to find who's responsible. Under the province's Off-Road Vehicle Act, those not following the regulations can face a fine, and have their vehicle impounded at the owner's expense.
