Stonewall could see a new cell phone tower erected in the near future.

MTS' first proposal didn't go as well as they'd hoped, and Stonewall's Mayor Lockie McLean explains why.

"When we first saw it, and the consultant from MTS came out, there was no red light not to proceed. When they canvassed the residents in the area they found out pretty quick they didn't like it. They thought it was too big, at one point it would be covered by a barbed wire fence, and it wouldn't fit in with the desires of the residents in that area."

McLean says an MTS Consultant returned with a much better proposal.

"They re-jigged it, and came up with something that's going to be a lot more palatable. It's a lot smaller, and it's not as obtrusive as what was initially planned. So now they have to go back to the people in the area and get their blessing, and if this time the area residents have no qualms with it, Council will give them the green light to move ahead."

He says MTS could've just went ahead with the project, but they didn't.

"The good thing is though, that MTS did consult us because it really doesn't fall under the Municipal Act. If they wanted to, on their own property, put up this sort of tower they could've gone ahead and done it. So they were good enough to consult the public, listen to the input from our council when we heard from the public, and make some good changes to it."

He feels the people will be pleased with the new proposal.
