The next round of water main and sewer improvements in the town of Treherne are being discussed, as new federal funding becomes available. Reeve Craig Spencer says they completed the first two phases of the five-phase project last summer, splitting cost between the federal, provincial, and municipal governments. Spencer says with new funding available they're now hoping to take on the next three phases of the work.

The municipal portion of the cost is paid for solely by the utility users in Treherne, as Spencer notes they're the only beneficiaries of the work. If they're successful in their application, they'll need to hold a public hearing before approving the work. Spencer notes the cost of the work was a topic of concern for some who attended the public hearing for last summer's work.

"I think the majority were in favour, but there were some opposed to renewal due to the annual cost they'd have to pay for this renewal. If I remember correctly, it was in the lower teens per month cost over 20 years to pay off that debenture."

However, Craig says this work is necessary, given the challenges with water and sewer infrastructure seen in recent years. He notes the current infrastructure is about 50 to 60 years old, and it's in need of renewal. He adds while they do take citizen's concerns seriously, they also need to focus on addressing the infrastructure deficit, which is seen throughout the province.
