A fire started just after midnight on Wilkinson Crescent in Portage la Prairie last night in a detached garage behind the home.

Detached garage engulfed in flames

Judy Samels is the neighbour who called 911, and shares what happened.

"Something actually just woke me up and I saw a light coming through the blind. And I just looked out the window and when I looked out the window and a little greenhouse attached to the garage was on fire. The flames were already shooting right up. And it was very quickly engulfing his garage with that, and that's when I phoned 911.  And I got the police and they said they were notifying everybody else."

She notes the police didn't take any time at all to arrive on the scene. Firefighters soon arrived and the fire was extinguished by 1:00 a.m. No other structures seemed to have been damaged and nobody was injured.

Samels explains while she was on the phone after having made the 911 call, residents of the home came out to see what was happening.

"I was on the phone just talking with them and waking up my husband. There were still lights on in their house. so I figured someone was awake.  I said I was going to just wake up my husband and go over there.  While I was talking to them (police), the family came out of the house."
