A man on a mission passed through Portage la Prairie yesterday evening. Stanley Barkman started his journey from Sioux Lookout to Fort McMurray on foot last week and explains explains why he started the walk.

"People of Fort McMurray are losing their homes. A large part of the town is destroyed. I'm hearing that around 80% of the town has been destroyed and I would like to just help out as much as possible. I know won't be able to bring the whole town back but I'm just doing what I can to help out."

Barkman says the walk hasn't been easy but hearing peoples honks and encouraging messages makes it easier.

"It's been okay. The first three of four days are challenging. Once you get used to it you get rolling. It's pretty cool, we get a lot of support and love with people driving by honking. I like that a lot."

He explains they are taking whatever amount people are willing to donate.

"We will take whatever people want to donate. It doesn't really matter how much they want to or not. We set up a go fund me account also."

Stanley was joined by his cousin David Barkman a few days into the walk and the pair arrive in Fort McMurray by June. If you wish to make a contribution, donations can be made at Stanley Barkman's GoFundMe page.
