While the greenspace in front of the Red River College campus in Portage is getting its facelift, some of the material being removed will be going to MacGregor.

Larry McleodSub-contractor Larry Mcleod is removing the fencing and ball diamond backdrop, and says he had a visitor while working.

"He just drove by -- a local fellow, he's an electrician here in town, I guess. And he saw me removing it and asked what they're doing with the ball diamond. So, I said that they're going to salvage as many pieces as they can. Then they want to repurpose it and put it out in MacGregor at their local club. They don't have enough funds, and theirs is in disrepair. And this one's much better. And the benches. There are seven or eight benches that we're going to pull out, and they're going to repurpose them as well. They're going to take them back to MacGregor."

That visitor was electrician Brent Gurke. Gurke explains his idea.

"I drove by, and I saw the guy disassembling. So, I stopped and inquired where it's happening, and where it's going. He said it's just being torn out to make a greenspace. I thought, if he needs to repurpose the material, I could certainly put it to use in MacGregor to fix up the ball diamond there. Right by the Normac Arena."

Brent GurkeGurke says some volunteers worked on their dilapidated diamond last year for their annul fair, and it required more work. Gurke's wife is facility manager with Heartland Recreation Karla Gurke, and is responsible for the diamond, arena, and multiplex, and was thrilled to hear of the news. Gurke will be taking the material to MacGregor on Friday.

They did some work there last year with volunteers to fix the ball diamond up for the annual fair, but it needs some more work. They're taking the material today.
