We're almost at the end of October, and that means the potato harvest in this province is also nearly done.

Manitoba Agriculture's Potato and Horticulture Crops Pathologist Vikram Bisht says this year's production has been very good.

"The weather toward the end, right now, is not as good for people who just got delayed, but in general, the potatoes were coming out pretty well. The ground was just moist enough, and not very warm, so the potatoes are keeping very well."

He says in the Portage la Prairie area, the potato crop's looking good as well.

"It is the Winkler region which had many rain events, which prevented the growers from finishing everything. But even in that region they have finished most of it -- some acres were left. But in Portage, i understand that the harvest has been reasonably good."

He acknowledges there were some concerns about late blight in this year's crop, which he calls reasonably high, compared to last year.

"However, the growers really upped the ante on fungicide management of disease. And, I was pleasantly surprised that not many potato storages have the late blight rot issues."
