The Portage la Prairie Lions Club is on the hunt for new members.

They're on the lookout for people to join their club year-round, but an event set for April 16th aims to reach out to those thinking about joining the non-profit organization.

Local Lion Anita Hart says the organization's a great way to give back, noting their initiatives include everything from planting trees and reading to children, to providing eye-glasses to impoverished areas, and many local projects.

"Lions Prairie Manor, that was us. We have helped the local swim team, different camps for kids that are bereaving or kids that have eyesight difficulties. We've bought computer equipment for people that are visually impaired, so special keyboards or magnifying screens, different wheelchairs and ramps...The list goes on and on."

While there's no doubt the club's making contributions to the community as a whole, Hart says it's also a very supportive group, who act like a second family to their members.

"When members are having tough times we step up and give them a hand when we can, just like we do for the community, but it just always seems more personal because it's family. It's definitely a lot of fun and a nice way to just give your time to be able to help."

Hart says it's a great organization to get involved with, noting many want to help their community, but are unsure of how to do so, or don't have the means to make financial contributions.

"I've noticed in the last six months to a year, with the job losses that are happening and illnesses, people in the community want to help, but can't afford to help. We don't ask for money, other than your dues every year but that's like nothing. We're just looking for time, and people that are willing to give their time to help someone have a bit of an easier life."

Next week's event takes place at the Lions Den, behind Splash Island between 10:30 and 3 pm.
