If you've been along 18th Street North in Portage la Prairie recently, north of the railway tracks, you've noticed installation of light standards is under way.

They'll eventually continue onto Park Drive, as part of the City's walking path initiative.

Mayor Irvine Ferris notes they're at the beginning of the process.

"V&R is working on installing the fixtures. I've been told it's going to be a while before Hydro gives us a power drop to put those in. It also involves some lines going under the railway track. We're thinking that probably those lights, by the time everything's done, probably won't be on until next year."

He says despite the timeline, it's a good feeling to see the project moving forward.

"It's nice to see the progress. It's been slow at times, but it's nice to see the big plan coming together, and progress being made."
