This week's Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65 annual general meeting in Portage la Prairie heard their building's in bad need of a new roof.

Jack McLean spoke to the members about how it's been leaking on the south side for a long time, and how it's urgent the work gets done. He explains the problem's due to how a new roof was installed over the original, after he looked at the work himself.

"When they broke open the seal of the original roof, they never sealed it again. And then, the heat coming out of the building goes up through all the unsealed areas, gathers on the outer roof, and in the spring-time rains, basically, because it turns to frost. And then when the heat comes, all that moisture falls back onto the original roof, and now it's started to undermine the old roof in that end."

McLean says a rough quote of $50,000 is needed for the repairs.

Incoming President Bob Oldford agrees the work needs to be done in 2017, adding it's something that's been weighing on his mind.

"And we have been looking at what we need to do. Definitely, in the spring, we will be putting out to tender as to getting the repairs done that need to be done, or the replacement of the roof. it will have to be done in this next fiscal year, and I'm glad that the general meeting has agreed that it's something we move forward with."

Legion members also approved securing a loan to finance the repairs.
