The federal government is planning to demolish the buildings at the Kapyong Barracks in Winnipeg.

The site has been the subject of a 15 year legal battle over land claims between the federal government and the First Nations Treaty 1. Long Plain First Nation Chief Dennis Meeches shares the treaty's reactions to the buildings being knocked down.

"We were aware of it, we have discussed it at our Treaty 1 table. The government had advanced that request to us and, without prejudice to what's been going on with our negotiations, we're fully in agreement with their request."

He adds the buildings do need to come down and it will make things easier moving forward.

Meeches notes the primary concern of Treat 1 is resolving the land question. He says things have been moving quickly over the past year and believes a deal can be reached. Meeches explains he can't speak on behalf of Peguis but says, hypothetically, if they were on board with Treaty 1 then a deal would likely be reached a lot sooner.
