The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Foundation is holding Jumpstart Day in Portage la Prairie is taking place tomorrow, but has changed locations due to inclement weather.

Big Brothers Big Sisters executive director Dawn Froese outlines the location.

"Jumpstart Day is now at the curling club because of the imminent weather. It'll be from from 11:00 a.m. til 3:00. And it's a fundraiser for our local chapter to help less fortunate kids register for sports and dance and just activities that keep them moving. So, these are kids that can't afford to do that. Last year we helped between 400 and 500 kids."

She notes the activities.

"We're doing a barbecue. People need to eat. Everyone can come out and enjoy the barbecue. There are hotdogs and burgers. And then we're also doing a bunch of kids' activities. Actually, some of the games are for adults as well. So you buy a punch-out card for $5.00 and you go around and do everything you want. There's face-painting, balloon animals, helium balloons, hockey shoot, tin can race, soccer pull, penny toss, mascots will be there, and sno-cones and popcorn. "

Froese explains how important a part community support plays for Portage.

"Community support for jumpstart is huge because the foundation gives us some funding, but when we do a Jumpstart Day that's extra money that goes just for us. And the foundation matches what we bring in on Saturday. So it doubles the amount that we have to give to kids in our community. to make them healthier, to get them active and to allow them to grow in a sport. For some kids this is the only opportunity they have to participate in soccer or swimming lessons. Or dance. By the community supporting jumpstart day, they are actually supporting perhaps their neighbour, their child's friend."

She adds, "We're just so very thankful that Canad Inns stepped up and agreed to partner and allowed us to be at the curling club. Certainly kind of at the last moment, but we are just so thankful that we can continue, and we don't have to worry about the rain."
