The reeve of the RM of Rockwood says the roads in the municipality are in rough shape. Jim Campbell says frost boils and potholes on gravel and asphalt roads are making it nearly impossible to use some of them. He notes they haven't been in such poor condition in a number of years.

"Roads in Rockwood have been, for lack of a better word, they've been kind of ugly this year. Only once in my political lifetime have I seen roads as bad as they are now, we've had frost boils that are just crazy. To get home on my own road I'd have to drive a mile and a half out of my way to get home because I wouldn't be able to get down the road some days, and it has affected pavement and gravel."

He says heavy trucks are part of the reason for the problem.

"Most of our asphalt roads are not weight restricted in the spring, so you'll get trucks that are using them that probably wouldn't in normal conditions, but they're getting detoured around some of the soft spots on the gravel roads because of all of the frost boils, and then they go over the pavement and break the pavement up. It's just one big snowball that seems to be getting bigger and bigger."

Campbell says a lot of work has already been done to the roads, but notes there's a lot more to go.

"We authorized our guys to work overtime, and I've got to give the transportation department credit because they've been doing a great job in trying to get things back. The roads aren't as good as they be at this time of year, but they're way better than what they were. Same thing with asphalt, some stuff that we weren't planning on fixing or working on this year, we have to because some places in the pavement has been unsafe to travel on so we have to juggle money around and make things work."

Campbell says the huge amount of rain in the last few months hasn't helped much either. He 's noticed other municipalities around the region are dealing with similar issues.
