The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after a suspect sustained an injury while in the custody of Dakota Ojibway Police Service (DOPS).

DOPS has notified the IIU of an arrest that occurred the afternoon of Dec. 3, 2016. According to police, they received a telephone complaint from a woman regarding the conduct of a male in her home. Police attended and arrested the individual, and transported him to the Long Plain detachment. After being remanded into custody later that day, the man complained of severe pain in his hand and was taken to hospital for an assessment. Doctors determined he had a broken bone in his right hand.

While a broken hand bone is not defined as a serious injury under regulations, the IIU civilian director has determined that it is in the public interest to investigate.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty. For more information about the IIU, visit www.iiumanitoba.ca.
