Portage la Prairie's Herman Prior Centre has been working hard at their fundraising campaign the past few months.

Chairperson Peggy Mitchell says they're anything but stable, but they plan to get there.

"We're certainly not at a stable position, but we're trying to look at different ways of ensuring that we can eventually retain a stable situation. We've had some positive responses from organizations, and businesses, and individuals. it's not a short term, it's going to be a long term, over the next months and years to ensure that we can stay stable."

Mitchell says they're going to need more than the two grants they receive yearly.

"We get a grant from Southern Health, and that's basically for the wage of our Executive Director of around the $43,000. But we partially pay for 3 staff out of that, and then have to look to all of our fundraising events to help cover the cost of the wages. Then we get a grant from the city, an operating grant of $15,000 per year."

Mitchell says the HPC is one of Manitoba's best senior centres.

"Out of the 46 senior centres that are around Manitoba, Herman Prior offered the most free programs. That comes from your cards, your floor curling, your exercise programs, whatever goes on, and looking ahead we're implementing a drop in fee of $2"

She's confident they'll get the funding situation under control in the future.
