The Grandmothers Giving's 10th Annual Fall Dinner takes place today at the Herman Prior Centre in Portage la Prairie. Co-chair Janet Schellenberg outlines their dinner's history.

"Originally I thought we would go for ten years. We're all ten years older, but we're still going. We have raised right now over $50,000 last year. That was our goal and we did in the eighth year."

She says they're holding an African marketplace-themed meal.

"We have a marketplace. We are selling some things from Fairholme this year again -- multi-grain buns and the pies, which are always popular. They are selling their wares as well. We have that running from 4:30 p.m. and dinner's served at 5:30. It's just the dinner. But we do like to have a sit-down dinner for families. It's a way of celebrating the harvest here."

Schellenberg says all of their efforts are community oriented.

"Our group runs from April to this dinner in September, because most of the women and some of the men, too, who support this group are busy with other community projects. So, every project we do we try to give back to the community some way."
