The President of Association of Manitoba Municipalities says AMM does not support the cosmetic pesticide ban that has become law in this province over the last couple of years.

Chris Goertzen of Steinbach says AMM remains consistent with its position.

"We don't think the cosmetic pesticide ban is useful and practical and what it does is it ends up creating a scenario where there is increased costs, dramatically increased costs for municipalities," says Goertzen. "And there's different standards that people start to apply to their own properties."

Goertzen says those different standards have become quite evident this year.

He says AMM has not heard anything from the new government concerning potential changes to the ban. But Goertzen says AMM is planning to meet with the new minister in order to talk about the practicality of the ban and how to improve regulation.

Goertzen notes people want to see less pesticide, herbicide and chemical use in our communities. Yet he says there must be a sense of practicality. Goertzen explains if there are no alternatives and we must settle for cities and communities that are not as beautiful and if invasive species start to become prevalent, then it becomes a real concern.

"So we need to look at this practically and we look forward to talking about this with the government," says Goertzen.

According to Goertzen, he hasn't heard how this ban is being enforced. But he says municipalities have been in compliance and adds people generally follow the rules, even when rules are impractical.
