If you've ever wondered what geocaching is, you can find out tomorrow at the Portage Regional Library, between 12:30 and 2:30.

Organizer Rick Bowser says Geocaching 101 will take you through the basics, and explains it's electronic treasure hunting.

"There are caches that are placed world-wide, and there are likely 2.5 million, roughly, caches world-wide. So, you would go to geocaching.com, and you would download into a smart phone or GPS, the coordinates to a cache. And it will only take you to a rough area of about 20 feet, and then you'll start searching."

Bowser says people are drawn to geocaching for different reasons, and explains his.

"Geocaching has taken me to some place that I likely would never have seen. There's the hunt, of finding something that's unknown. The hunt is quite challenging, but I think the best part of it all is being to places in the world -- because I've geocached wherever we've travelled -- and I've seen some beautiful things out there. People have put some caches in some wonderful places."

He notes there are geocaches in Portage, although the exact number isn't known.

"They vary from time to time, depending on whether or not there are new ones placed. There are likely approximately 75 within a 10 minute drive of Portage. In the province of Manitoba, there are almost 8000 caches."
